Vendor bites cop during anti-encroachment drive

NAGPUR: A head constable from Nandanvan police station was bitten by a roadside vendor on Wednesday when a violent clash broke out during anti-encroachment drive by

Nagpur Municipal Corporation

(NMC) in Hasanbagh area. The police later detained the vendor and also resorted to mild lathi charge to disperse the agitated vendors.

Encroachments in Hasanbagh area have increased

manifold

. Illegal hawkers have not spared even the roadside in front of Hasanbagh police post.

Following complaints of blatant encroachments, which are also causing frequent traffic jams, the NMC anti-encroachment squad led by assistant municipal commissioner Ashok Patil, a team from Nehru Nagar zone accompanied by police team reached the area. As soon as the NMC team started removing encroachments in front of the police post and between Rajendra High School to Ishwar Nagar Square to KDK College, the shopkeepers registered their protest with the enforcement squad.

As the NMC team went ahead with removing encroachments, the shopkeepers had a heated argument with the officials.

In the melee, a few vendors allegedly stood in front of excavator which was demolishing illegal constructions. Head constable Vilin Tambde, attached to Nandanvan police station’s detection squad, tried to move the vendors away from the excavator. Before Tambde could understand anything, one of the vendors allegedly bit him on the neck. Other cops present there detained the vendor.

Nandanvan senior PI Vinayak Chavan said an offence under Section 353 of IPC has been registered against vendors preventing the NMC’s anti-encroachment drive. The police have also detained the vendor Shakeel who attacked the cop.

Meanwhile, the anti-encroachment squad along with its market department razed 18 shops on railway feeder road near Santra Market. The shops were razed to pave way for Metro Rail work.
