NAGPUR: Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology’s ten-day annual event ‘Institute Gathering’ (IG), organized by the Students Council, kicked off on Tuesday evening with a plethora of activities.

Creatively curated events ranging from sports (outdoor and indoor), literature, and art to culture, including stage and street plays, have been lined up.

, was the chief guest. AB Mirajkar, professor in charge, and Yogesh Patil, general secretary, were present.

This was followed by kabaddi, throwball, volleyball and basketball matches between various departments of the institute. Computer science engineering department and metallurgy and materials engineering department locked horns in kabaddi. The civil engineering department and mechanical engineering department competed in throwball.

Volleyball was an enthusiastic affair for the teams of department of architecture and department of electrical and electronics engineering. The much-awaited basketball match between the departments of chemical engineering and electronics and communication engineering was exciting.

On Wednesday, there will be badminton, table tennis, volleyball, kabaddi and kho kho matches. Video game lovers will also get to indulge in PUBG and FIFA. Food Festival will have various stalls and be open from 2pm to 10pm.

Gyan Pratik Singh, alumni affairs secretary of VNIT, told TOI, “Students look forward to IG every year. This gathering brings the entire university on one platform. There are a variety of events; there is something for everyone. People can indulge in their hobbies, passions and interests.”

Utkarsh Srivastava, vice-captain of the cricket team, said everyone is eagerly looking forward to the upcoming matches. “Our civil engineering department’s cricket team won last year. This year, we are even more excited. We have also been practising for a few days.”

“Another thing which makes the match exciting is the rule which makes it mandatory to include a professor and a fresher in our teams. Playing with our professors will be fun as everyone gets quite friendly. It truly becomes a cherished experience,” he added.
