Man arrested in twin murder & robbery case

Nashik: The Ahmednagar police have arrested a suspect allegedly involved in the killing of the grocery trader and his sister-in-law in an armed robbery in Marwad Galli of Shevgaon on Friday.“The suspect is identified as Khedkar Tabar Chavan (32), a resident of Mharola, Bidkin in Paithan taluka of Aurangabad,” said deputy superintendent of police Sunil Patil of Shevgaon. Patil said Chavan has confessed to the crime.Chavan had decamped with jewellery worth Rs 4.95 lakh after killing the trader, Gopikisan Gangabisan Baldava (50) and his brother’s wife Pushpa Harikisan Baldava (62). He had also injured Gopikisan’s wife Sunita (48), when she had tried to resist him.The robbery had taken place sometime between 3.30 am and 4 am on Friday. Chavan had entered the house from its first floor by opening a wooden door, initially killing Pushpa who was sleeping on the first floor and then Gopikisan who was sleeping in the drawing room.The police had secured the CCTV footage of the suspect when he arrived at Baldawa’s residence and left after the murders and robbery.Based on the appearance of the suspect, his body language and the modus operandi of committing the crime, the police focused on their attention on three criminals on police records.Through an informer, they got the name of Chavan.Patil sai Chavan is a habitual criminal and he has seven cases of dacoity, robbery, murder, etc registered against him in different police stations.Traders in Shevgaon observed a bandh in protest against the robbery and murder on Friday.
