Children’s Day: Fun for some but biz as usual for street kids

NAVI MUMBAI: Bookstores and gift shops are all lined up with offers for Children’s Day. Schools will also make the day special for the children. However,

street

urchins say they have very little to rejoice.

Many bookstores will be hosting special events, book reading sessions and contests. “Children who visit the store that day can avail of some special offers,” said a book store attendant.

While for some children it would be a day of hanging out with friends and celebrations, for the streetkids selling a medley of items at the traffic signals the day doesn’t seem to have any relevance. “What difference does it make to us. For us it is more important to earn our daily wages,” said

Sarla

, who sells fans.

Likewise, 14 year-old Milan who sells keychains says their priority is getting two meals. “There is no time for fun when one needs to earn a living,” he said.

Although schools try to teach children the significance of the day, one wonders if today’s children understand the relevance, said Vanita Kulkarni, a school teacher from Vashi.
