Navi Mumbai: NMMC doctors successfully operate two mucormycosis patients

NAVI MUMBAI: Two successful operations performed by the NMMC hospital doctors on two patients of mucormycosis at

Vashi

has boosted the morale of the civic doctors to tackle the black fungus disease as well as coronavirus.

Talking to TOI, the NMMC FRU (first referral unit) superintendent, Dr Prashant Jawade, said: "Both the operations on a 73 year old man and a 49 year old male were highly challenging. However, our team of surgeons and ENT doctors have done a commendable feat by curing both these patients. Each operation lasted over three hours as the medical team had to carefully remove all the infected tissues around the skull region."

Dr Jawade added that in particular, the operation of the 73 year old patient was more difficult as he was already blind in one eye, had multiple co-morbidities and a cardiac history which included stents in his heart. "The doctors had to be extra careful not to damage the functioning eye of the old patient so as to prevent full blindness. All team members, including the nurses, stayed highly focused throughout the surgeries, for which they deserve our kudos."

, said: "The intricate operations done by our municipal doctors shows that we can tackle serious infections too. So far, there are 25 mucormycosis cases in our city, and all patients are being cared for in government and private hospitals."
