NAVI MUMBAI: The volunteers of

Navi Mumbai Networking

social service group kicked off their New Year celebrations by removing nearly 500 illegal hoardings, banners, metal plates which were hammered into trees with nails.

"We started our 'New Year Tree Top Party' from

Vashi

toll plaza on December 31, where several illegal billboards and metal banners were stuck on tree trunks and branches. This is an initiative of our founder, Sundeep Sharma, to do something good for the society and the environment," said Nilesh Kachare who headed the project, aided by

Kiran Dhavale

's Shree Sadguru Enterprises.

Kachare added that besides the illegal tree banners, their group also removed several nails and screws which held up these hoardings in several nodes like Vashi, Nerul, Belapur, Sanpda, Koparkhairane among others.

"The volunteers of Navi Mumbai Networking worked throughout the night and continued till the wee hours of the New Year. All these illegal hoardings have been submitted to the

Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation

for their perusal," he added.

Sundeep Sharma added that this is the tenth consecutive New Year that they have taken up a socially relevant project which will benefit the society at large. "When you hammer nails into trees, it is a violation of the tree preservation rules and regulations and can also fatally harm the trees which was so very vital for our environment," he said.

The activists hope that this will send a strong message to the public so that trees are not harmed and misused for displaying hoardings.
