Elevated road work knocks out electricity supply in Gzb

Ghaziabad: For the past three days, Ghaziabad has been facing long

power cuts

due to the ongoing construction of an elevated road from UP Gate to Raj Nagar Extension. While the residents say the outages disrupt the normal life, officials of Paschimanchal Vidyut Vitaran Nigam Limited claim they had advertised about the crisis in the newspapers in advance.

“The construction of an elevated road is in progress from UP Gate till Raj Nagar Extension. For this the 220kV transmission line from Sahibabad to Muradnagar had to be raised so that the elevated road could be easily constructed underneath,” said K C Sharma, superintending engineer,

area. “To manage the situation, we also tried borrowing some supply from both Delhi and Noida but to no avail. This is a temporary glitch and the normal power supply will soon be restored,” he added.

There are nearly 32 substations operating in the trans-Hindon region. The shutdown for raising the 220kV line was taken up by the GDA on September 30 and it was to be reversed by October 2 in the evening. Chakresh

, executive engineer, GDA said, “We have completed raising of the 220kV transmission line on Sunday. The electricity supply will hopefully be restored soon.” “Once the 400kV sub-station being developed near Shipra Mall is energised, the electricity supply of Indirapuram will be the best in Ghaziabad,” he added.

The residents, meanwhile, are braving long power cuts. “The electricity supply has been very erratic lately. The power is out for more than six hours every day,” said Puneet, maintenance supervisor at the Gaur Gravity Market. “Even though we have two generators which help us in providing backup to the entire market, these are dysfunctional in some markets,” he added.

The outages in commercial areas are also affecting business. “I own a cyber cafe in Brij Vihar and my trade is heavily dependent on stable power supply,” said Vikram.

The situation at Nyay Khand, located very close to the trans-Hindon Electricity Department, is further complicated. Nyay Khand 1, 2 and 3 are inhabited by GDA allottees. “ I live in the GDA flats and the power supply is very irregular since the last four days,” said Manish.

“The power is out for 3-4 hours, it returns for half-an-hour and then there is a long outage again. This is more or less the pattern. We cannot even charge our inventors, which is our only hope. Also, the residents are completely devoid of any maintenance support and are purely dependent on each other’s cooperation,” he added.
