Noida: With temperatures touching 44 degrees Celsius, Noida and Greater Noida have witnessed a major spike in power demand. In the past week, Noida’s consumption rose by 561 MW to settle at 2,609 MW, and Greater Noida’s increased by 115 MW to reach 852 MW.
A superintending engineer (SE-Technical) of Pashchimanchal Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited, Vivek Kumar Patel, said the power demand has been climbing steadily since May 12 after the mercury breached the 40 degrees Celsius mark. “The peak demand is expected to cross 3,000 MW in July and Aug, when the humidity is at its peak,” he told TOI.
Last year, Noida’s peak demand was 2,800 MW.
According to officials, Noida has been adding about 120 MW of power demand annually. This demand is mostly attributed to more people buying houses in the city and the expansion of commercial and industrial activities in the district.
“On average, the city adds nearly 2,200 new electricity connections every month, even as about 170 consumers opt for disconnection. These attributes contribute to almost 10 MW of load added to the system every month, contributing to the yearly increase. Seasonal variation remains stark, with demand dropping to around 1,600 MW in winter,” said a power department official.
The discom has over 4.5 lakh consumers in Noida, of whom about 85% are domestic consumers. They account for 43% of the overall electricity consumption, said officials.
Meanwhile, Greater Noida has already crossed last year’s peak demand, which was recorded at 832 MW on June 12, 2025.
The Noida Power Company Limited (NPCL), which supplies power to Greater Noida, in Feb already projected a surge in power demand to 950 MW for this summer. The discom attributes the hike to increased residential, industrial and commercial developments in the area.
The discom caters to over 2 lakh consumers, the majority of them being domestic connections, along with large and small industries, commercial establishments and institutions.
Both discoms have assured enough supply to meet the power demands of the district. “NPCL recently inaugurated a new 33/11 kV substation-cum-switching station in Sector 16B, Greater Noida West, on May 14, with a capacity of 12.5 MVA. This new facility is set to improve reliability and ensure a better quality of power supply not only for residents but also for commercial consumers in connected areas, including Sector 16, Ecotech 15 and beyond,” said an NPCL spokesperson.
In Noida, too, about 19 new substations, over 400 transformers and upgrades of existing substations are underway under the Central govt’s Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme, as well as annual business plans of infrastructure repairs.
