Noida: A portion of the perimeter wall built around 30 years ago in Jal Vayu Vihar, one of Noida’s oldest colonies, caved in on a group of 12 workers repairing a drain adjacent to it on Tuesday morning, killing four of them. Two of the victims are minors.
The repair and cleaning of the drain was being carried out by a contractor of Noida Authority. One of the workers told TOI they had informed the contractor that the foundation of the wall was weak and it could collapse, but were told he would “take care of it” while work went on at the site.
No structural analysis of the wall to examine its strength was carried out by the contractor before starting the repair work. Gul Mohammad, a sub-contractor who had sourced the workers for the project, was arrested from the Sector 18 Metro station later in the day.
