GHAZIABAD: The district president of Hindu Yuva Vahini, founded by Yogi Adityanath, was booked on Sunday for allegedly firing in the air on the evening of Diwali.

The accused,

Jitendra Tyagi

, is a resident of Morti village in Ghaziabad.

Tyagi was booked after police took cognizance of a video clip that purportedly shows Tyagi firing several shots in the air. The video clip had been doing the rounds in social media ever since the day after Diwali.

An FIR against Tyagi was registered at Sihani Gate police station under Section 25 of the Arms Act. Investigations are underway to ascertain the exact location where the video was shot and the person who filmed it on a mobile phone.

“We took suo motu cognizance of the video clip. Inquiries were conducted following which an FIR was registered. The clip had gone viral on social media in the past few days,” SSP

Hari Narayan Singh

told TOI.

The clip, which lasts 1.12 minutes, shows at least five rounds being fired. It shows Tyagi, dressed in a red T-shirt and dark-coloured shots, firing in the air with a gun, purportedly a rifle. Another man is also seen firing in the air with a pistol in the same video. A voice in the background eggs on one of the two girls to open fire in the air. Tyagi is seen helping the two girls – purportedly his family members – in firing the weapon. Towards the end of the video, a few kids are seen lighting sparklers in front of the house where the video was purportedly shot. This has led cops to believe that the time when the firing took place could have been Diwali evening.

Tyagi was not available for comments despite repeated efforts to contact him. Investigations are underway to ascertain if any of the girls seen in the video, firing with Tyagi, are minors. The police have also recommended to the district administration to withdraw the arms licence, if any, held by Tyagi.
