PATNA: Cellphones in jails have long been an unpalatable fact of life but an undertrial prisoner in Bihar’s Gopalganj served up a hard-to-digest shocker when he swallowed his cellphone out of fear of getting caught during a surprise check Saturday, reports Manoj Chaurasia.

Qaisar Ali, accused in a 2020 case of smuggling narcotics, was rushed to a hospital but has now been referred to Patna to extract the “foreign object” stuck in his abdomen.

Reports from prison and hospital authorities suggested Qaisar was busy talking on phone when a police team conducted a check. After swallowing the phone, he had severe abdominal pain and informed prison officials, who rushed him to the hospital.

“The accused said he had swallowed the phone, fearing he could be caught. His condition is stable and we’re keeping close watch,” hospital deputy superintendent Shashi Ranjan told TOI.

Qaiser has been in jail since January 2020.
