PATNA: Girls outsmarted boys once again by bagging 10 of 15 gold medals awarded to the toppers of different examinations of professional courses at the fifth annual convocation of
Governor-cum-chancellor Lalji Tandon, who was the chief guest on the occasion, gave away the medals made of 22 carat gold to the toppers. Education minister Krishna Nandan Prasad Verma and health minister Mangal Pandey were the distinguished guests. AKU vice-chancellor A K Agrawal conferred coveted degrees upon as many as 5,103 passouts of the last examinations.
For the first time, two scholars were awarded PhD degrees from the university. Both the recipients carried out their research in the field of nanoscience. They were also given a cash award of Rs 2,500 each by AKU founder vice-chancellor S N Guha.
Scholars who were awarded gold medals at the convocation included Rohit Kumar (diploma in anaesthesia), Amit Anhishek (doctor of medicine-anaesthesiology), Jyoti (master of surgery-ophthalmology), Ankita Kumari (master of education), Alpana Pathak (MBBS), Devendra Kumar Mandal (BTech-mechanical engineering), Nikita Kevin Natal (bachelor of education), Shruti Singh (BBA), Aniket Kumar (BCA), Nihal Kumar (BCom-professional), Sanju Kumari (bachelor in business economics), Arushi Jayaswal (bachelor in mass
Alpana Pathak of Patna Medical College and Anish Fatima of Vidya Vihar Institute of Technology, Purnia, were awarded gold medals for being best graduates in medical and engineering examinations, respectively.
Governor Tandon expressed his pleasure at the students attending their convocation in Indian costumes recommended by the chancellor’s secretariat. He called for more quality research in the latest branches of science and technology, the results of which must be applied in solving the socio-economic problems of the country. He also lauded the commendable performance of girls in higher education.
State health minister Mangal Pandey announced that 11 new medical colleges will be started by the state government in the next five years and the foundation stone of at least five of them would be laid within one year. He urged the medical graduates to serve the poor people of remote villages at least for three to four years after getting their degrees. He also appealed to AKU to promote research in Ayurveda for the benefit of the mankind.
Education minister Krishna Nandan Prasad Verma said the university had done commendable job in a short span of time. AKU VC A K Agrawal presented the annual report. Principal secretary to governor Vivek Kumar Singh, AKU pro-VC S M Karim and registrar Rajiv Ranjan were also present.
