Nawada politics heats up as Yadav vs Yadav battle looms
Gaya: Nawada's political scene has turned interesting with three related yet separate developments reshaping the district's balance of power. The INDIA bloc appears desperate to retain its hold while the NDA is equally determined to carve out fresh ground in this region.
The first of these changes is Kaushal Yadav's decision to sever ties with JD(U) and align himself with the RJD. The second is the release of Nawada strongman Raj Ballabh Yadav, who walked free after spending nearly nine years behind bars on charges of raping a minor, before being acquitted by the Patna high court. The third is the political posturing of Prakash Veer and Vibha Devi, who now seem poised to part ways with the RJD.
Nawada has long been a prize catch for both major alliances. In the 2020 assembly elections, the Mahagatbandhan secured four of the district's five seats, leaving only Warisaliganj in the BJP's hands. There, BJP candidate Aruna Devi defeated her Congress rival Satish Kumar by 9,000 votes. Of the Mahagatbandhan's four seats, Congress won Hisua while the RJD took Nawada, Rajauli and Govindpur.
Yet the equations are shifting. Both Vibha Devi and Prakash Veer were given prominent seats in the second row during PM Narendra Modi's Gaya visit on Friday, dropping strong hints of their readiness to begin a new political innings. But there is a measure of uncertainty in Vibha's case.
Her position was earlier seen as a proxy for her jailed husband Raj Ballabh Yadav. Now, following his acquittal, he is expected to reclaim direct control of his political base. The verdict also restores his eligibility to contest elections, reviving his relevance in the district's politics.
"With Kaushal deserting its camp, the NDA needs a strong leader in Nawada and Raj Ballabh is likely to fill the vacuum," said activist Motibhai, a long-time observer of the Magadh political scene.
Both Kaushal and Raj Ballabh are old rivals and their renewed confrontation is expected to become sharper in the coming weeks. For nearly two decades, the two families have dominated Nawada's politics. Kaushal's political journey has been marked by shifts across multiple parties and even independent campaigns. His mother Gayatri Devi contested on Congress and RJD tickets as well as independently. His wife Purnima, too, has fought elections on JD(U), Congress and independent symbols. Kaushal himself has contested independently in the past.
In contrast, Raj Ballabh and his wife Vibha have remained firmly anchored in the RJD camp. His re-emergence now promises to reframe the political contest in Nawada.
The district is once again on the brink of what many are already calling a "Yadav vs Yadav" battle.
