GAYA: In a bid to provide some relief to farmers in the rain deficient Gaya district, installation of private tube wells has been proposed in different blocks to ensure irrigation facility to the farm fields. "A subsidy upto 80 % will be provided to the farmers under the chief minister's Saat Nischay Yojana Part 2," said DM Thiyagarajan SM.

The DM said those progressive farmers, who have at least 4 acres of land, would be eligible for the scheme. "Priority will be given to small and marginal farmers. A grant of 50% to general category, 70% to backward and most backward class, and 80% to SC/ST category farmers will be given under the scheme," he said.

A team constituted by the district magistrate has conducted a survey in the panchayats across the district, and recommended to install 514 private tube wells in different blocks. These include highest number of 121 tube wells in Dobhi block, followed by Gurua ( 84), Banke Bazaar (81), Konch (63), Fatehpur (50), Mohra (45), Nimchak Bathani (28), Paraiya (14), Atri (9), Wazirganj (6), Gaya sadar and Bodh Gaya (4) each, besides Belaganj, Khizersarai, Sherghati, Tankuppa and Tekari one each.

According to information provided by the district agriculture department office, in the month of June 165.59 mm rainfall was recorded against 345.74 mm required, and 127.09 mm against the 288.9 mm in July in the district. Most of the traditional water bodies across the district are dry, affecting the paddy cultivation.
