PUDUCHERRY: Jipmer Faculty Association (JFA) has condemned the brutal murder of a second-year postgraduate medical student at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.

In a press release on Tuesday, JFA president Dr Bikash Kumar Naredi said the heinous act committed within the halls of the institute during duty hours was a grim reminder of the grave dangers faced by those who selflessly worked to care for others.

The indications that the resident might have been subjected to sexual assault were beyond devastating, he said.

“The entire Jipmer community is heartbroken… Our residents and staff dedicate countless hours to serving the public, often under intense pressure and in high-stress environments. They do so out of a deep sense of duty and commitment to improving lives. It is unimaginable and utterly unacceptable that those who have devoted themselves to public service should find themselves in such danger,” he said.

The statement said, “JFA mourns the loss of a bright and dedicated individual and stands united in condemning the conditions that allowed such a tragedy to occur. A place of learning and healing should never be a place of fear and murder. The failure to protect those within our institutions is a failure of society as a whole,” he said.

The association pointed out that the tragedy was not an isolated incident. A 25-year-old house surgeon at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital in Kollam, Kerala, was stabbed to death in May 2023.

“The increasing violence against healthcare workers, particularly those on the front lines, is a crisis that demands immediate and decisive action. Our residents, who share the major burden of medical work in hospitals, must be protected at all costs,” he said.

The association stands in full support of the Indian Medical Association (IMA) in their demand for justice. “We urge the authorities to take swift and comprehensive action to ensure the safety and security of all medical personnel. JFA urges the implementation of the Central Protection Act. Their protection is not just a necessity— it is a moral imperative. Protecting those who protect us is our collective responsibility, and let us make a promise to urgently provide a safe environment for our frontliners,” said the statement.
