Puducherry election results 2024 live updates: CONG's Ve. Vaithilingam vs AIADMK's G Thamizhvendan
Puducherry is a Union Territory which has a single Lok Sabha seat in the parliament. It is known for its blend of Indian and French cultures, it includes four regions: Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, and Yanam.
The total population is approximately 16 lakhs. The majority of the residents are Tamil-speaking but there are also significant numbers of people who speak Telugu, Malayalam, and French.
The literacy rate in Puducherry is high, around 85%. The population is a mix of Hindus, Christians, and Muslims, reflecting a rich cultural and religious diversity. The territory is also known for its educational institutions and relatively high standard of living compared to other parts of India.
→ In 2019, INC candidate Ve Vaithilingam emerged victorious and got 4,44,981 votes. AINRC candidate Dr. Narayanasami Kesavan was the runner-up and got 2,47,956 votes.
→ In 2014, S. Radhakrishnan from AINRC got 2,55,826 votes and won the seat. V. Narayanasami from INC got 1,94,972 votes.
In the 2019 elections in the Union Territory of Puducherry, the Indian National Congress (INC) emerged as the leading party with 56.27% of the vote share, followed by the All India NR Congress (AINRC) with 31.36%. The fledgling party, Makkal Needhi Maiam (MNM), led by actor-turned-politician Kamal Haasan, secured a notable 4.81% of the votes.
In the preceding 2014 elections, the INC had secured 26.35% of the votes, with AINRC getting at 34.57%. The AIADMK and PMK secured 17.93% and 3.07% of the votes respectively.
The 2009 elections saw the INC leading with 49.41% of the votes, while the PMK secured 34.32%.
