Puducherry govt urged to secure 50% MBBS seats in private medical colleges under govt quota: Forum

PUDUCHERRY: A students-parents' welfare forum has urged the Puducherry govt to secure 50% of MBBS seats in three private medical colleges and hospitals under the govt quota.

In a memorandum submitted to the chief minister and the lieutenant governor, Pondicherry State Students’ and Parents’ Welfare Association president Vai Bala alias Balasubramanian said there are three medical colleges and hospitals in Puducherry with an intake of 650 MBBS seats but the seat-sharing committee could secure only 240 seats under the govt quota in the last academic year 2023-24.

Balasubramanian said the respective govts in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat and in other states secured between 50% and 65% of MBBS seats in private medical colleges under the govt quota.

Puducherry could secure only 31% of the seats in private medical colleges under govt quota. This prevents students of Puducherry Union territory to join MBBS course.

The seat-sharing committee should ensure a minimum of 50% of MBBS seats in private colleges under govt quota to protect the interests of the students of Puducherry Union territory, he said.
