Three special teams formed to nab abductors of farmer
Vellore: A day after a 36-year-old farmer kidnapped for ransom was released fearing police action, the Vellore district police formed three special teams under the supervision of Arakkonam DSP on Saturday to nab the culprits.
Suspecting foul play by one of the farmer’s relative in the case police have launched a manhunt for him. Kumaran, 36, a farmer has been living with his wife Abirami at Ponnappathangal village near Arakkonam, a senior police officer said. Kumaran, who has been involved in a land row with his uncle’s family over rights for a six-cent farm land, sought the help of his distant relative Saravanan, 40, hailing from T Veeranam Mottur village, to settle the issue after holding a ‘kangaroo’ court. On Friday evening, Kumaran who went to meet Saravanan did not return home, but after two hours, Abirami received a threatening call demanding a ransom of Rs 30 lakh to release her husband. A horrified Abirami, with the help of her father Selvaraj, lodged a complaint at Banavaram police station on Friday night.
On Saturday morning, Selvaraj received another call from Saravanan claiming that he knows the culprits behind Kumaran’s abduction and asking to arrange the ransom so that the kidnappers do not harm Kumaran. Suspicious over this call, Selvaraj informed police that he doubted Saravanan and demanded his arrest. Before police could trace Saravanan, Kumaran was released on Friday night. Nevertheless, based on Abirami’s complaint, three special teams were formed under the supervision of Arakkonam DSP Vijayakumar on Saturday to nab the culprits.
