PUNE: MSEDCL officials and the owner of a house were booked on Monday for alleged negligence, which left a three-and-a-half-year-old boy limbless after he came in contact with a live transformer in close proximity to the house he was staying as a tenant in with his family.

The incident had occurred at Sachhai Matanagar near

Katraj

on April 18. The boy was first taken to a nearby hospital where doctors referred him to the Sassoon hospital. The boy’s father, Ganesh Gaikwad (29) of Bopodi, has lodged a complaint with the

Bharati Vidyapeeth

police.

Gaikwad, a tailor, rented the house around a year ago. “The incident occurred when Gaikwad’s son Aadi was playing alone on the terrace of the house on the evening of April 18. The boy picked up a small piece of cable in his hand. While playing, the wire came into contact with the live transformer,” senior inspector Vishnu Pawar of the Bharati Vidyapeeth police said.

The transformer was just a foot away from the house. “The boy collapsed on the terrace. His mother was in the house then,” Pawar said.

“Initially, it was believed that the boy just suffered serious burn injuries. However, after medical tests, it was revealed that the boy’s veins were irreparably damaged. The doctors at the hospital had no choice but to amputate his hands and legs,” Pawar said.

The officer said the transformer was in place there even before the house was built. “We will investigate how the house was built so close to the transformer. We will check if the property was illegal,” he said.
