PUNE: Criminal Investigation Department (CID) chief Ritesh Kumar on Monday emphasised on the use of modern technology by police to detect crimes and improve conviction rate, particularly in heinous and sensitive cases.

"The overall conviction rate of the Maharashtra police is 55.36%. With the use of modern technology and hard work, the it can go up to 70%," he said at a function to felicitate police personnel for investigating serious, sensitive and complex cases and achieving convictions.

Kumar said, "In 2008-09, the state's conviction rate was about 8.5%. The government had then reviewed the rate and introduced many programmes."

He said, "The state police have made advances in the use of Automated Multimodal Biometric Identification System and introduced softwares for palm prints, iris scans and facial recognition." Inspector General of Police Suresh Mekla and deputy inspector generals of police Sudhir Hiremath and Ranjan Sharma were present at the event.
