Mob attacks HRS member in Hadapsar

PUNE: One person was arrested and 17 others were booked on Wednesday, a day after they allegedly attacked a Hindu Rashtra Sena member — Kiran Khomne (20) — at Gondhalenagar.

Khomne was on his way home on a motorcycle on Wednesday evening when the suspects signalled him to stop near the ATM Chowk. “They pushed Khomne and he fell off the vehicle. One of the suspects assaulted him with a sickle on his back, while the others started beating him up. Khomne abandoned the bike and made a daring escape,” assistant inspector Kiran Londhe of the Hadapsar police said.

He said, “Khomne was attacked over the suspicion that some Hindu Rashtra Sena (HRS) members were allegedly involved in the murder of Sujit Verma of Gondhalenagar. Six bike-borne men had killed Verma on January 28. Khomne had nothing to do with the murder case.”

Injured Khomne was admitted to a hospital. Londhe said he was discharged after treatment.

“A CCTV camera captured the images of the suspects attacking Khomne. We registered Khomne’s complaint and arrested Rajesh Nadar (22) from Gondhalenagar. We have also established the identity of five suspects and booked 12 others on the charges of rioting and causing grievous hurt among other charges of the Indian Penal Code and Arms Act,” he added.

Senior inspector Vishnu Pawar of the Hadapsar police said, “The situation at Gondhalenagar is peaceful. There is no law and order problem. We have deployed policemen at the spot and other fixed points. We have intensified patrolling to prevent any untoward incident. Police teams have been fanned for arresting the suspects on the run.”

Jobless Khomne has been a member of the HRS for the past five years. HRS has a sizeable presence in some pockets of Hadapsar, like Kalepadal and Gondhalenagar.

Dhananjay Desai, an accused in the murder case of IT professional Mohsin Shaikh, is the president of the HRS. Desai is languishing at the Yerawada central jail after his arrest. His plea seeking discharge from the murder case is pending before the high court.
