MSRTC canteens to sell tea, breakfast at fixed rate of Rs40 from June 1: Sarnaik

Pune: All Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) canteens will sell tea and breakfast at a fixed rate of Rs 40 from June 1, 2026, announced the state transport minister Pratap Sarnaik on Thursday.The minister, during his inspection of the Vallabhnagar depot in Pimpri Chinchwad, added that the restrooms established by the transport body must have facilities on par with the homes of the staffers, and drivers should get proper rest and be fresh on duty.The minister announced that mirroring the practice at hotels and motels along highways, a scheme to provide tea and breakfast to all passengers at ST bus stand canteens for a fixed price of Rs40 will be launched."This will allow commuters, especially travellers with humble backgrounds, to have proper food at affordable rates. There are some closed canteens which will be provided to women's self-help groups and young entrepreneurs at nominal rental rates. This initiative will not only boost the revenue of the MSRTC but also ensure better amenities for both passengers and staff," Sarnaik said.He added that there were complaints that the ‘Nathjal' brand of bottled water belonging to the MSRTC was being sold for Rs20. "Overcharging will not be allowed, and those overcharging customers will see their licences being suspended or cancelled. The price of one litre of water stands at Rs15," the minister said.While talking about basic amenities at MSRTC-run restrooms, the minister said, "Restrooms should be kept tidy and hygienic. Arrangements must be made for clean drinking water for staff and hot water for bathing should be provided in these restrooms. Facilities should be at par with what the staffers have in their homes. This will ensure that they are able to rest comfortably and be active and fresh. The same will also help in avoiding accidents."Accidents involving MSRTC-run buses have been on the higher side. In 2024-25, as per official data from the transport body, MSRTC recorded a total of 3,563 accidents, resulting in 470 deaths and 3,234 serious injuries.While the figures for 2025-26 are not yet out, sources said the numbers were high, and mishaps had become a matter of concern. "While accidents happen for various reasons and the fault can be of anyone, the drivers have to get good facilities which can help in avoiding many accidents. Many times, accidents have happened due to drivers not being active due to tiredness and stress," another MSRTC official said.
