One held in Mundhwa jewellery store robbery

Pune: The city crime branch on Friday night arrested one of the three suspects in connection with the robbery of gold jewellery worth Rs2.5 lakh from a jewellery store at Borate Vasti off BT Kawade Road in Mundhwa around 9.35pm on Dec 8.A search is under way for another two suspects wanted in the case.Police identified the arrested suspect as Manoj Tukram Suryavanshi, a resident of Dhayari Phata. On Saturday, a crime branch team produced him before a magisterial court, which ordered his custodial remand till Dec 22.On Dec 8, two masked men threatened jeweller Walchand Oswal (78) at the latter's newly opened Arihant jewellery store with a pistol. They then sprayed pepper spray into his eyes and attacked him with a sickle butt before robbing him of jewellery. Oswal, who stays near Quarter Gate, initially registered an FIR relating to armed robbery against two men, but analysis of CCTV footage and information given by witnesses revealed that a third man riding the bike used in the jewellery store heist was standing at a short distance from the crime scene.Crime branch (unit V) senior inspector Yuvraj Hande told TOI, "We established the identity of the third person as Suryavanshi, but his whereabouts were not known since the robbery. We took him into custody from his hideout after an informer tipped off the police that he had arrived at his residence. During questioning, he admitted to his involvement in the crime. He told police that he drove two accomplices to the jewellery store on a bike."Suryavanshi revealed the names of his accomplices who were yet to be caught. He said they were in possession of the stolen loot, bike, and weapons."Teams from the crime branch and Mundhwa police are working on certain clues to arrest them," Hande said.
