PUNE: Pune district collector Rajesh Deshmukh has imposed section 144 in 17 villages, including Perne Phata and Koregaon Bhima area between December 30 and January 2, 2021, ahead of the
Bhima Koregaon battle anniversary
event scheduled on January 1, 2021. No outsiders will be permitted to visit these villages during this period.
Deshmukh in a press release started that the superintendent of police (Pune Rural) Abhinav Deshmukh has informed that on the backdrop of covid-19 pandemic and code of conduct due to Gram Panchayat elections, it was necessary to impose the section 144 in and around Perene to restrict the crowd of people, the press release stated.
According to the press release Only those given passes by police will be allowed to visit the 'Jay Stambh' (Victory Pillar) in Perne village to pay their tributes in the memory of the battle of Koregaon-Bhima. The passes will be available at Pune Rural police's headquarters in Pashan and also at Shikrapur and Lonikand police stations. No rallies, book stalls and food stalls have been permitted in the area.
Thousands of people visit Koregaon Bhima village to offer their tributes on the anniversary of the battle, which was fought on January 1, 1818, between the British East India Company and the Peshwa faction of the Maratha Confederacy.
