The victim, Aruna Mohite (21), from Chinchner-Vandan, was married for two months to a man from

Vadgaon-Nimbalkar

in Baramati taluka of Pune district and was residing at her marital home. On November 30, she went to meet a friend and was reported missing since then. Her body was found near Thoseghar on Tuesday.

The violence was triggered after Aruna’s relatives learnt that the

Pune rural police

had arrested Siddhartha Danane, a resident of the same village, in connection with the murder, police said. The mob set vehicles on fire and ransacked at least 50 houses.

Danane, an acquaintance, allegedly bludgeoned her to death near Thoseghar as he was upset with her marriage to someone else.

Superintendent of Satara Police Sandip Patil told TOI on Wednesday, “The situation in Satara and in Chinchner-Vandan village is under control. We have appealed to the people to not spread rumours and resist from posting anything on social media which would create trouble.”

Tension prevailed in Panchshilnagar till the police rushed to the spot in the wee hours of Wednesday. “We have arrested 34 persons from Chinchner-Vandan on charges of

unlawful assembly and rioting

. No untoward incident happened on Wednesday,” said inspector D G Nale.
