Raipur: Five Maoists surrendered before Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) at Kondagaon in tribal Bastar district of Chhattisgarh on Tuesday.
A CRPF spokesman said the surrender was the outcome of constant pressure mounted by security forces in the region and the rebels' growing dissatisfaction with Maoists' lifestyle.
He said the rebels surrendered at 188 Battalion CRPF at Kondagaon. The surrendered Maoists are Guddu (33) Soop Singh (40) Rajman( 30) Santer Dugga (40) and Sobhi (38). All of them were both warrantees and rewardees involved in various Naxalism related offences of serious nature.
The surrendered Maoists revealed that they joined the movement after coming under the influence of Maoist commander Phool Singh, Kishore and Vikram. The Maoist commanders kept these five Maoists with them for days before threatening to kill them in the name of police informers if they went back to their families.
Later they joined Maoist ranks and began participating in criminal activities, including demolition of school buildings, ashrams, and Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blasts and disrupting road construction work and attacking police/security forces.
CRPF officials assured them of all benefits under Central and state surrender and rehabilitation schemes.
CRPF DIG (ops) Sanjay Yadav, Commandant 188 Bn Helal Firoz, Kondagaon additional collector Maheshwar Nag, Kondagaon ASP Amit Kumar, Deputy Commandant Sandeep, asst commandant Suraj Singh were among those present.
