RAIPUR: Congress candidate Savitri Mandavi has established a lead in Bhanupratappur (ST) assembly by-poll with Sarva Adivasi Samaj backed independent reaching the second position, relegating opposition BJP to a poor third as counting progressed at the district headquarters of Kanker in tribal Bastar division in Chhattisgarh.

Bypoll Results 2022 Live UpdatesSavitri Mandavi has secured 16,133 votes while the Sarva Adivasi Samaj candidate polled 9,153 votes and BJP secured 19% when about 40,000 votes were counted. The Congress candidate has so far secured about 43.08% votes, establishing a comfortable lead in the assembly by-election.
By-poll to Bhanupratappur (ST) assembly seat was necessitated following the death of sitting Congress legislator Manoj Mandavi. His wife Savitri Mandavi is testing her electoral fortunes as a Congress candidate to retain the seat for her party.
Independent candidate Akbar Ram Korram, a retired DIG of police, is backed by Sarva Adivasi Samaj which is spearheading a campaign for the restoration of reservation benefits of tribal communities as ST reservation had dwindled to 20% from 32% per cent following a high court order in September last.
BJP had fielded Brahmanand Netam, a former legislator, to contest for the seat but as of now, he has been relegated to the third position.
