Raipur: All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Raipur, conducted its first Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery, a minimally invasive neurosurgical procedure of implanting a brain pacemaker that bring relief to patients suffering from Parkinson's disease.
A 42-year-old woman from Chhattisgarh’s Baloda Bazaar, suffering from advanced Parkinson’s disease and highly abnormal bodily movements for last seven years, underwent the DBS surgery at AIIMS Raipur.
In India, DBS surgery is done at a few government centres, which include AIIMS New Delhi, NIMHANS and SCTIMST among others. In central India, AIIMS Raipur is the only centre where DBS surgery has been done in the department of Neurosurgery in collaboration with state governed DKS PGI. TNN
