As of the current date, six products and one logo from Chhattisgarh have received a GI tag. The project also aims to conduct a livelihood impact assessment of the communities that have received a GI tag for their products. The project has been sponsored by the IIT Bhilai Innovation and Technology Foundation (IBITF), dedicated to supporting socially relevant research.

The workshop witnessed the launch of the interim report of this project by Prof. Rajiv Prakash, Director, IIT Bhilai. Commenting on the notable progress made by the project team in conducting a state-of-the-art survey of scholarly literature in the domain, Prof. Prakash emphasized the importance of undertaking research that creates opportunities for strengthening livelihoods at the grassroots through strategic interventions and handholding. He reiterated IIT Bhilai’s commitment to contributing to the holistic development of the state of Chhattisgarh in keeping with its people’s aspirations and needs.

The workshop consisted of two sessions by resource persons from Reinforce Intellectual Property Organization (RIPA), which undertakes Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)-based advocacy in the country. RIPA president Naveen Coomar and founding member Lalit Ambastha conducted sessions on the social, legal, and economic aspects of GI tagging in India.

The workshop proved to be a pertinent opportunity for Ph.D. scholars, project staff, and faculty alike to gain specialized insights into GI tagging and enhance their understanding of IPR in India.
