IIT Bhilai spearheads wind energy research for a sustainable future

RAIPUR: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhilai has taken a significant stride towards environmental sustainability by announcing groundbreaking research in the realm of wind energy.

In a pioneering move, the institute has installed its first windmill on the IIT Bhilai campus, seamlessly integrated with the electricity grid. This 5-KW windmill boasts a daily power generation capacity ranging between 25 and 30 units.

Speaking on this development, Professor Rajiv Prakash, Director of IIT Bhilai, emphasized, "This initiative resonates with our commitment to foster environmental stewardship and innovation. By synergizing wind energy with our ongoing solar research endeavors, we aim to advance towards our overarching objective of fulfilling our energy requirements sustainably."

This venture heralds a new era in the state's energy landscape, as efforts in wind energy now complement existing solar initiatives. The installation of the windmill represents just the outset; ongoing initiatives within the department of electrical engineering are geared towards enhancing the efficiency of current wind turbines and exploring cutting-edge wind energy technologies for the future.

Dr Shailendra, an electrical engineer, highlighted that undergraduate and postgraduate students will now engage in projects centered on renewable wind energy, facilitating the development of small-scale windmill projects. Through this initiative, IIT Bhilai not only pioneers advancements in wind energy technology but also sets a benchmark for the adoption of innovative energy generation methods in the sector.
