The incident flared up and led to protest by tribal organisations demanding action against the police officer - forcing the state government to initially order an inquiry by Bastar IG and later chief minister Bhupesh Baghel tweeted that the officer is being shifted from the tribal district of Narayanpur.

“Police officers are expected to act strictly against the offenders but it’s not worth forgiving when the officers cross their limits and beat up their subordinates. Orders have been given for removal of Narayanpur superintendent of police for his uncontrolled behaviour,” CM Baghel tweeted.

Earlier also there had been several complaints against this officer during his postings in Bilaspur and Mahasamund districts.

IPS Uday Kiran thrashed his driver on duty, constable Jailal

Netam was beaten up so badly that he had to be hospitalised.

Chief minister Bhupesh Baghel who is on a two-day tour to Bastar, initially ordered an inquiry in the matter and has asked inspector general of police P Sundarraj to investigate and submit a report and take action. CM said that no one is above law and order and action would be taken against those violating it.

P Sundarraj told TOI, “I have taken cognizance of the issue. Would ask for an explanation from the official and based on the report, would ensure appropriate action.”

The tribal group in Bastar expressed rage over the matter and former tribal MP from Bastar

Sohan Potai

demanded immediate removal of the IPS from his post and lodge an FIR against him under the Atrocities Act.

Potai said, “This isn’t the first time that this IPS officer has used muscle flexing but no action has been taken against him. This shows either the government has gone inefficient or the police department. If he isn’t removed and action isn’t taken against him, we would go on a massive protest.”

Other representatives of tribal organisations reached the hospital to meet Netam and they warned of protest if action wasn’t taken against the SP.

SP Uday Kiran before the local media has denied beating up the driver stating, “I simply scolded him, warning that he would be removed if he wouldn’t deliver his duties properly.”

This 2015batch IPS officer had been involved in many such controversies and used muscle power during his previous postings. The Supreme Court had recently ordered Chhattisgarh police to register an FIR against Uday Kiran on an earlier complaint in 2018, on alleged physical assault with a sports persons including girls at a police station in Mahasamund district. The IPS along with other cops had also brutally cane charged former legislator

Vimal Chopda

when reached to protest in front of the police station in the same case.

The Supreme Court has said that the case will be probed under the CID, but state police are yet to lodge an FIR.
