Class 3 student dies of food poisoning in Bijapur, 34 others ill
Raipur: A Class 3 girl student died and 34 others suffered from food poisoning after having meals at a govt girls' residential school in insurgency-hit Bijapur district of Chhattisgarh. The Class 3 girl was being shifted to Jagdalpur Medical College Hospital on Monday night when she succumbed. The condition of nine girls is stated to be critical and they are under intensive care while others are recovering.Bijapur collector Sambit Mishra told TOI that an enquiry has been ordered in the case and sub-divisional magistrate is leading the investigation team. Though the exact cause of food poisoning isn't clear yet, the probe is underway. The girls are all students and residents of Mata Rukmani Dhanora girls' ashram of Bijapur that houses 83 students from Class 1 to 8.The chief medical health officer Dr BR Pujari told TOI that the girls were served Kheer-poori chhole on Sunday for lunch and they had cottage cheese for dinner. Hours after having meals, they started vomiting and many complained of abdomen ache and nausea. When their condition started worsening, around 30 girls were taken to hospital and had to be admitted on Monday. By evening, 35 girl students were brought to the hospital.CMHO said that the condition of two girls deteriorated by Monday night and they were referred to Jagdalpur Medical College Hospital. While they were being shifted to Jagdalpur, one girl Shivani Telam succumbed near Bhairamgarh area while the other girl was admitted. Shivani also suffered from epilepsy attack, and had a health-related history, the doctor said. Among the 33 girls admitted in Bijapur hospital, condition of two is worrisome as their ECG reports are not normal and nine are in ICU. The inspection team visited the hostel and since there was no food sample available there, the food safety officer has collected the stool samples of girls. Sources said that the girls informed that a lizard had fallen in the food that was served to them on Sunday evening, while there were disputing statement that the cottage cheese served in dinner was stale. Parents of the ailing girls have protested that the hostel was serving food as per their wish and not following the menu, while the quality of food was also compromised with, that's why so many girls have fallen ill. They have demanded an immediate action against hostel superintendent for negligence.
