NEW DELHI: A 35-year-old woman and her 7-year-old daughter were found hanging from a tree near a government high school in Kunni village, Chhattisgarh's Surguja district, on Friday morning.
The woman's husband works as a teacher at the same school, police said.
According to preliminary investigations, Meena Gupta allegedly hanged her daughter, Astha, before taking her own life. Police suspect the incident followed a heated argument with her husband, with whom she had a long-standing marital dispute. The couple's divorce case is pending in a local court.
The incident happened on Thursday when Meena and her daughter visited the school and confronted her husband. After school hours, while the husband left for home, the woman and her daughter remained outside the premises.
"The next morning, they were found hanging from a tree near the school. Prima facie evidence suggests the woman first hanged her daughter and then herself using a rope," a police official said.
A case has been registered, and further investigation is underway to ascertain the full details of the incident.
