Monsoon vigorous across S’rashtra, Rajkot battered

Rajkot: Monsoon was vigorous over Saurashtra and Kutch region and active over north Gujarat on Sunday with heavy to very heavy rainfall at many places in Rajkot, Junagadh, Kutch and Devbhumi Dwarka districts.Heavy rainfall caused waterlogging in major towns of Rajkot districts, including Gondal, Jetpur, Kotda Sangani, Upleta and Rajkot city. In rural areas of Rajkot district, several villages got cut off due to roads getting submerged in rainwater. Similar was the situation in Gir Somnath and Devbhumi Dwarka districts.For the first time this year, the Aji river in Rajkot was flowing bank-to-bank with increased inflow from the upstream of the river. The Ramnath Mahadev temple also got submerged in rainwater.Severe waterlogging was witnessed in Gondal in Rajkot as rain continued to pound the town since Sunday morning. Waterlogging was reported on College Chowk road even as the underpass was closed to vehicular traffic. A wall behind the village hospital collapsed on a luxury car damaging it completely. Commuters had to wade through over 2 feet of water on most roads of Gondal.A family from Rajkot had to be rescued after their car got caught in the heavy current of water near Nyari dam. The district authorities used a crane to pull out the car from the water.In Jetpur, water entered several houses in the old town area. As a result of heavy downpour, one door of the Aji-2 dam had to be opened as the water reached the danger mark.The road joining Majethi and Lathi village in Upleta taluka got submerged in rainwater cutting off vehicular movement there. As the Fofal dam in Rajkot district started overflowing due to inflow from the catchment area, the villages downstream were alerted.As many as 13 reservoirs in Rajkot district recorded fresh arrival of waters.In Gir Somnath district, the authorities recovered the bodies of two youths who got swept away in rainwater in Gir Gadhada taluka on Friday evening. While the body of Sanjay Baraiya (22) was found on Saturday night, the body of Jaypalsinh Khasiya (23) was recovered on Sunday. As the rain continued for the second day, four doors of Hiran-2 dam in Talala taluka were opened and 9,022 cusec of water was released.Heavy waterlogging was reported on the Junagadh-Rajkot highway causing traffic jam. In Amreli, seven dams started overflowing due to fresh inflow from the catchment area. Several localities in Botad town were inundated as rain lashed several parts of the district.In Bhuj town of Kutch, holiday was declared for Monday in government offices as the historical Hamisar Lake overflowed in Sunday.A car got stuck in the causeway near Pavadiyari village in Morbi village. Two persons inside the car climbed on the roof of the car and cried for help as the water kept on rising. The duo was rescued with the help of locals and fire brigade officials.In Chuda taluka of Surendranagar, a bus got stuck in the middle of the causeway leaving the passengers stranded.
