2 more cement firms sign pact with BSL for slag procurement

Bokaro: The slag produced in the steel-making process of Bokaro Steel Plant (BSL), a unit of Steel Authority of India, is in high demand, particularly from the cement industry, which is making a beeline at BSL to avail it.
Blast-furnace (BF) slag, a by-product of iron when it to a blast furnace is a raw material for the cement industry. Two noted cement brands, Ultra Tech Cement Limited and ACC Limited, have entered into a long-term agreement for BF slag with BSL. The agreement was signed on Friday.
Dalmia Cement Limited is already buying BF slag from BSL. Sources said BSL sells slag worth ₹150 crore annually.
BSL chief of communication Manikant Dhan said, “BSL produces about 1.5 lakh metric tonnes of granulated slag every month. This slag is used as a raw material by the cement industry. For the disposal of waste slag, BSL has signed a long-term agreement with UltraTech Cement and ACC Ltd.” Under the agreement, 12.96 lakh metric tonnes will be supplied in three years.
