BOKARO: An elderly woman died while her husband and two others were battling for life in a hospital after consuming an ayurvedic (herbal) medicine provided by a quack (vaid) at Dhwaigjar Tola in Jagudih village of Ordana Panchayat under Petarwar police station area on Sunday, officials said on Monday.

The deceased was identified as Upasi Devi (61). Those under treatment are her husband Ram Charan (64), and two quacks identified as Laghanu Bedia and Radheshyam Soren, who used to run a makeshift ayurvedic medicine shop in Jagudih village.

Officials said the couple had gone to the shop to get medicine for arthritis and the quacks gave Upasi some medicine stating that she would feel the impact of the medicine in half an hour. But soon after consuming it at the spot, Upasi began vomiting within haf an hour. Even then, the vaids asked her husband to try the medicine though he was hesitant at first. On seeing his reluctance, the two vaids consumed it to demonstrate it before him after which Ram Charan, too, took it.
