RANCHI: A 17-year-old girl has allegedly died by suicide in Jharkhand’s Ranchi, nearly a month after accusing her teenage boyfriend of sexually assaulting her, police said on Tuesday.
The accused, a 16-year-old boy, was detained by police on 18 April and is currently being held in a remand home.
The duo were reportedly in a relationship before the alleged assault took place.
The incident came to light after the girl accused the boy of sexually assaulting her at his home on 17 April. Since then, she had reportedly been struggling emotionally.
A suicide note was recovered from the house and is being examined as part of the investigation.
"The girl was found hanging in the bathroom of her house on Monday afternoon. A preliminary investigation suggests that the girl was in a relationship with the accused. On 17 April, the accused took her to his home and sexually assaulted her," a police officer said.
"She was deeply shocked by the incident, which led her to take such an extreme step," the officer added.
The body was later handed over to the family following a post-mortem examination.
The accused is a Class 9 student, while the girl was an intermediate student.
Further investigation into the case is underway.
