JAMSHEDPUR/RANCHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s itinerary in Jamshedpur was disrupted on Sunday as heavy rainfall and inclement weather conditions kept his chopper grounded at Ranchi’s Birsa Munda airport, forcing him to travel to Jamshedpur and back by road.
Modi arrived at Ranchi at around 9.05 am but was held up at the airport for nearly two hours. He flagged off six Vande Bharat trains from the airport’s VIP lounge as the airport officials scrambled to arrange LED screens and a lectern to set up the props for the PM’s address to the gathering at the Tatanagar railway station.
Modi began his nearly 15 minute address from the airport by wishing the people of Jharkhand on the tribal festival of Karma. “When I landed in Ranchi a short while ago, one of my sisters put Jawa (sapling) plant over my ear. It is the symbol of Karma festival which is a celebration of love between a sister and brother,” Modi said.
Around 11:37 am, Modi left the airport premises in a convoy and headed to Jamshedpur by road. Traffic was held up for nearly 20 minutes at Hinoo Chowk to clear the road for the convoy’s movement.
He reached the Steel City nearly two hours later and took the stage at Gopal Maidan in Bistupur within a minute of arrival. “It is the PM’s affection for the people of Jharkhand that he travelled by road to meet the people by braving the rains,” Union minister of state for defence Sanjay Seth said.
