Poor power supply: JBVNL to pay for damaged appliances
RANCHI: Upendra Kumar, a resident of Kanke Road, had less than a minute to save his appliances. As the voltage fluctuated in his area to 440 Volts within seconds on Thursday evening, many big appliances, including refrigerator and fans, were damaged.
Electricity consumers who lost their large and heavy appliances to fluctuating voltages in the city need not worry because of an existing provision of compensation mandated under Central Electricity Act 2003. As thunder and lightening struck the capital on Thursday night with strong winds, transmission lines snapped, spiking voltage across the city.
JBVNL managing director Rahul Purwar said: "If there are such complaints of damage, consumers can submit a written complaint for due compensation. We will verify the situation and if the damages are indeed because of low power quality on our behalf, we will be paying for the damages caused. There is also an online provision for filing such complaints so that the consumers do not face any hassles."
With erratic weather conditions, the thunderstorms on Thursday evening wreaked havoc on the city's power supply as many parts of the capital continued to face power outage even on Friday morning. The high speed winds not only led to the widespread destruction of many electricity supply wires running overhead and poles across Ranchi, but the breakdown of several supply lines also left the city residents in dark without electricity supply.

"Many of us couldn't even figure out the high voltage issue as we use LED bulbs. There was a high voltage all through the night and no one came to sort it till late afternoon," added Madhu Kumar, another Kanke resident.
