RANCHI: The Ranchi Municipal Corporation (
RMC
) has roped in a private firm to prepare a detailed project report (
DPR
) of its plans to expand the existing fleet of city buses to facilitate commuters.
Talking to TOI, RMC’s assistant municipal commissioner
Jyoti Kumari
said, “A private firm,
Tandon Solutions
, has been hired to prepare the DPR of the routes, buses and their intervals. Based on the report, the city bus fleet will be expanded.”
Currently, RMC operates 40 buses while another 25 are grounded due to poor condition. RMC sources said the grounded buses are not in a state for repairs.
“Tandon Solutions has been working on the DPR since December last year. It is also surveying to ascertain how many passengers use the buses for their daily commute,” Singh added.
Notably, the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) announced the provision of 500 buses to RMC as a part of the Centre’s special initiative. However, the municipal corporation officials said they are unaware of the initiative.
Meanwhile, the shortage of city buses is causing inconvenience to the daily commuters. Over 70 passengers travel in a single up-down trip in a 52-capacity bus.
Neha Kumari
, a student of Doranda College said, “I have never managed to get a seat on a city bus.”
However, a city bus driver said, “We ply every 10 minutes. But when people cannot wait for the next one and crowd on a bus, we cannot force them out.”
