SALEM: Democratic Youth Federation of India members held a protest here on Tuesday demanding that the Salem Municipal Corporation (SMC) cancel its decision to hand over the piped drinking water supply in the city to a private company.
The SMC had floated a Rs 4,315crore tender to hand over the drinking water supply system to a private party.
DYFI members marched with a water jug tied to a pole and shouting slogans against the SMC’s move. They attempted to lay siege to the corporation office. Later, they submitted a petition to the officials.
DYFI district coordinator V Periyasamy said a series of protests would be held if the corporation was not going to cancel the move.
On Monday, opposition AIADMK councillors held a sit-in protest during a regular meeting of the Salem Corporation council on Monday opposing the move to hand over the drinking water supply system to private parties.
