Rasipuram councillor, husband end life after killing daughter

Namakkal: A councillor of the Rasipuram municipality and her husband committed suicide at their house on Tuesday night after killing their daughter by giving poison-laced food. While an initial investigation pointed out that the couple could be facing financial problems, police sources refused to confirm the same as the reason for the deaths.
The deceased were A Devipriya, 46, the DMK councillor for ward 13 of the Rasipuram municipality, her husband Arun Lal, 53, the party’s deputy secretary for the town, and their younger daughter Monisha, 18. The couple’s elder daughter works at a private company in Bengaluru. Monisha had completed Class XII.
Police said a few neighbours peeped into the house on Poovayammal Marriage Hall Street as it remained locked even after 9am on Wednesday. “They found the couple hanging from the ceiling,” a police officer said.
After being informed, police reached the spot and broke open the door. They also found the girl dead. They sent the bodies to the government hospital in the town for postmortem. “Initial test results showed that the girl was given rat poison.”
Rasipuram deputy superintendent of police D K K Senthil Kumar said they did not find any suicide note in the house. “Devipriya spoke to her brother and her mother on Tuesday. The couple also spoke to their elder daughter in Bengaluru. They advised her to take care of her health.”
Talking to TOI, Arun Lal’s cousin J M Boopathi said he spoke with Arun on daily basis but he did not tell him anything about financial problems.
Police registered a case and are investigating.
