SHILLONG: The city of undulating hills, gushing waterfalls, evergreen pines and colourful orchids isblushing with the bursts of the Himalayan cherry blossoms all over.
Almost all the pathways, localities and adjoining hills in the city have turned pink with cherry blossoms. “The road to my house seems like a pink path to paradise,” says a resident.
“These cherry blossoms attract bats that fly into the city from far away lands to hang on the branches of the cherry trees and feast on the flowers,” says another resident of the hill city.
“The cherry blossoms enchant and enhance the lives of the people in these hills,” says an artist who has been trying to capture the natural phenomenon on canvas.
Tourists have been arriving in the city to wander around and view the magnificent and awesome cherry blossoms in full bloom everywhere.
Visitors are thronging the Lady Hydari Park, Ward’s Lake and other scenic spots in and around the city where nature has declared festivity with cherry blossoms hanging down to lend the touch of pink.
In fact, cherry blossoms have transformed the landscape not only in the capital city but also the rural areas. “Our villages take on the colour of cherry blossoms making the winter warm,” says a youth from a nearby hamlet.
“I love to visit Shillong this time of the year to see the cherry blossoms ,” says a woman from neighbouring Guwahati, who has come here on a short visit.
“Cherry blossoms are in full bloom this year, just in time for the Shillong Cherry Blossom Festival. I invite everyone to visit our beautiful Shillong city,” chief minister Conrad K Sangma tweeted ahead of the festival on Thursday (November 24).
