Closure notice to four units for dumping 50 tonnes of waste into drainage pipeline

Surat: The Gujarat Pollution Control Board (GPCB) issued closure directions with immediate effect on Thursday to four units for unauthorised disposal of waste chemicals in the city's drainage pipeline, a racket which was busted in Bamroli area on Monday.Around 50 tonnes of waste was brought in two tankers from Bharuch industries and dumped in the drainage from the premises of two units.
Investigation revealed that the calcium chloride was brought from manufacturing units OM Chloride in GIDC Panoli and OPJ Chem Pvt Ltd of Dahej GIDC. Investigation revealed Uma Enterprise and Maa Enterprise in Bamroli facilitated the illegal dumping. The two city-based units were jointly fined Rs 25 lakh as Environmental Damage Compensation (EDC). GPCB also instructed Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) to disconnect water and drainage connections to the units.GPCB conducted a late-night inspection at Bamroli following information about illegal disposal of waste chemicals in the area.The teams documented the incident and expanded the inquiry to trace the origin of the waste and the network involved in its transport and disposal. According to the findings, the chemical was transported and disposed of unlawfully, with movements allegedly shown as product sales to conceal the nature of the material and bypass regulatory controls.
