Doctor files cross complaint alleging bid to extort 20L
Surat: Dr Pratik Mavani — who was on Thursday assaulted by relatives of a woman who accused him of molesting her — had filed a complaint against the woman's relatives for extortion, assault and rioting. Mavani, 36, has alleged that the woman's relatives demanded that he pay Rs 20 lakh failing which they would defame him. Mavani suffered an injury to his head. Kapodra police have booked the accused, including one Mohit, who claimed to be influential in the area.According to the details, Mavani has worked as a gynaecologist at Floral Women's Hospital for seven years. On Wednesday afternoon, he received a call from a radiology centre for the check-up of a woman patient. As he visits the centre regularly as a consultant, he went there and checked the patient for the HSG procedure. A woman helper and an x-ray technician were also present during the check-up. After the procedure, Mavani instructed the woman helper to remove the instruments. Mavani then went to the cabin of the doctor who owns the centre. Ten minutes later, the woman helper entered the cabin with two other persons. She pointed at Mavani and claimed that he had molested her. The other individuals told Mavani that if he wanted to resolve the issue and not face the disgrace of a police complaint, he should pay them Rs 20 lakh. Mavani refused to pay up and the woman called more people to the hospital. As Mavani refused to give in, one Mohit who claimed to be the ‘Don of Katargam' came forward. He assaulted Mavani with a weapon. Mohit, along with 10-12 others, started beating Mavani. As Mavani was bleeding from his head, emergency services were called and he was shifted to AAIHMS Hospital near Simada Naka. He was admitted to the ICU and doctors stitched up the wound on his head. Kapodra police filed an FIR for extortion, causing hurt, rioting, criminal intimidation and other offences.
