FIASWI protests anti-dumping duty on nylon filament yarn
SURAT: Federation of Indian Art Silk Weaving Industry (
FIASWI chairman Bharat Gandhi met Paatil, who is also Navsari MP, along with leader of powerloom sector.
FIASWI sources said out of 12 yarn spinners in the country, only two leading yarn spinners have applied to Directorate General of Anti-Dumping Duties (DGAD) for imposing anti-dumping duty on nylon filament yarn imported from China, South Korea and other Asian countries. If the DGDA agrees, then over two lakh powerloom machines will shutdown, rendering over 1.5 lakh workers jobless.
Bharat Gandhi said, “Over 10,000 weavers and their families in Surat will have to suffer due to imposition of anti-dumping duty on nylon filament yarn. The industry has been suffering for the past 11 years due to anti-dumping duty on nylon yarn, which was removed by the government in 2018 and now being reviewed by the DGAD.”
Gandhi said anti-dumping duty on yarn will increase import of cheap fabrics from China and Bangladesh. In 2018-19, garment and fabrics to the tune of $2 billion dollars were imported by India.
“Domestic weavers won’t be able to compete against cheap fabrics imported from China and Bangladesh. Yarn spinners are not able to manufacture nylon yarn compatible with the standards maintained by China. However, the spinners are seeking anti-dumping duty so that they can run a price cartel in India,” Gandhi said.
Ashish Gujarati, leader of powerloom sector, said, “Not only Surat, but powerloom centres like Ludhiana, Bhiwandi, Amritsar, Bhilwara and Varanasi will have to suffer due to anti-dumping duty on nylon yarn. We have requested CR Paatil to take up the issue with the central government and help the industry.”
