Teenage couple attempts suicide in garden, both survive

Surat: A teenage couple allegedly attempted suicide in the city on Friday, a day before Valentine's Day, fearing they would not be allowed to stay together. Both survived the bid and are currently undergoing treatment at SMIMER Hospital.The incident took place at Ugat Botanical Garden in Rander on Friday. The boy, identified as Rohan Nahin (18), allegedly consumed a poisonous substance and slit his wrist, while the 16-year-old girl also slit her wrist. Passers-by spotted them bleeding in the garden and alerted the police.They were rushed to SMIMER Hospital in an ambulance and were later declared out of danger after treatment.Preliminary police investigation revealed that the girl had left home on Thursday, telling her family she was going to study at a friend's place. When she did not return, her family lodged a missing person complaint.According to her family, the girl came in contact with the boy a few months ago through a common friend. She is a Class XI student, while the boy is neither studying nor employed and reportedly has disputes with his family. After learning about the relationship, her family allegedly asked her to end it due to his background, but she refused.Police are probing where the girl stayed after leaving home and how she spent her time. While the family has ruled out sexual assault, they have alleged that the boy kidnapped her.Statements of the girl, the boy and their family members have been recorded.
