SURAT: The water level in
Ukai dam on
Tapi river
is likely to touch 343 feet after three years following significant inflow into the reservoir from the upper catchment areas.
Dam authorities said if the inflow continues, they might issue an alert for the people living in the downstream of the dam in Surat city. In last two days, nearly 225mm rainfall has been recorded in the upper catchment areas of Ukai.
At 5 pm on Sunday, the inflow in the dam was 18,359 cusecs and the water level was 341.95 feet. The reservoir had ground storage of 6871.23 million cubic meter (MCM) water.
"Looking at the way water coming in gradually from the upper catchment, the level would cross 343 feet in some days," said
R M Patel
, superintendent engineer, Ukai dam. "At present, the dams in the upper catchment areas all filled above 94 per cent capacity and therefore they are releasing water. We are getting direct release from the Hathnur dam," he said.
The highest level of Ukai dam is 345 feet. However, in last three years, the dam has not been filled up to its full capacity and has reached a maximum level of 341 feet.
District collector Mahendra Patel
said, "Supplying water for irrigation, drinking and industries won't be a problem for the next one year."
