Doctors said the boy was lucky as the spikes had only pierced through his skin and did not harm his veins or bone.

The incident took place in the afternnon, when Shinde, who lives in Gharodiya Apartments at Louiswadi, was playing cricket with friends. When the ball flew over the compound wall, Shinde climbed the gate and requested passers-by to throw the ball back to them. His leg slipped and the spikes pierced through his right hand. His friends panicked and called the society residents who, in turn, alerted the Regional Disaster Management Cell.

“We kept assuring the boy to not panic and stay strong. We kept talking to him while we cut off the sharp edges of the spikes and pulled out his hand to keep him distracted,” said Santosh Kadam, chief at RDMC. “He did not lose consciousness. There was minor bleeding and we covered the wound with a cloth. Within 10 minutes, we rescued the boy and took him to hospital.”

Shinde was taken to the state-run Thane Civil Hospital, where he was given basic treatment before he was shifted to a private hospital. “The rod only pierced through the skin causing no harm to the veins or the bones,” said Dr Kailash Pawar, civil surgeon. “Hence, we gave him primary treatment and kept the wound open for it to heal. We did not administer stitches. His parents later took him to a private hospital for further treatment.”
