THANE: Rainwater entered the Mohane pumping station in the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation limits in the early hours of Thursday, leading to a temporary suspension of water supply in the twin cities.

"The water supply has been cut off in areas of Kalyan rural, Kalyan B ward, Dombivli East, and Dombivli West as rainwater has entered the Mohane pumping station," the

KDMC

informed.

Rainwater also entered the Mohili water treatment plant resulting in the suspension of water supply to the entire A ward, Birla College area and Waldhuni area.

At present, water from the Barave plant is being supplied to Kalyan East, Khadakpada and K ward.

The civic body added that the water supply in these regions will be restored only after the rainwater subsides in the pumping stations and water treatment plants.

The three major rivers around Kalyan and Dombivli -- Ulhas river, Waldhuni river and Kamwari river -- have overflowed due to the incessant downpour that has been pounding the twin cities and the surrounding regions since Wednesday morning.

Shahad bridge cordoned off
The Shahad bridge, which is one of the main flyovers connecting Kalyan to surrounding areas, has been temporarily shut due to severe waterlogging.

Police personnel have been deployed near the bridge to avoid crowding and any untoward incident.

Waterlogging has been reported from several low-lying areas and areas adjoining the water bodies.

Water has entered houses on the ground floor, as well as a number of shops, resulting in heavy damage to property.

Powerlooms and industrial units in

Bhiwandi

have been shut due to heavy accumulation of rainwater. People are being forced to wade through waist-deep water to reach safer locations.
